Listen!
Nobody on earth sounds like Khamira.
3 musicians from Wales and 3 from India create Improvised World Music - mixing Hindustani Classical music and Welsh folk music with jazz. Unique, alive, groundbreaking.
The Sarangi sings with the trumpet, the tabla dances with the drums while the guitar soars over the bass.
Miles Davis, Hindustani classical, Llio Rhydderch, Pat Metheny, Sufi singing, Welsh folk, Shakti, konnakol, rock, Tomas Stanko, jazz, it's all in there.
Our music contains multitudes and transcends continents,
...Come with us on our journey!
...Khamira first came together in 2015, touring India playing The Goa Jazz Festival, Kolkata JazzFest, Bangalore and New Delhi.
Khamira self-released their eponymous debut album in 2017, and their second album Undod/Unity was released by Tŷ Cerdd in 2022. Both albums received widespread acclaim and signalled the arrival and the maturing of an important new musical voice.
In 2017 Khamira showcased at the Seoul Music Week, South Korea and were awarded prestigious funding to tour both Wales and India as part of the British Council UK/India Year of Culture.
Khamira returned to South Korea in 2018 performing at the Ulsan Jazz Festival and the ACC World Music Festival in Guangju.
Post-Covid Khamira returned to tour Wales in 2022 to coincide with the release of Undod/Unity, performing at the prestigious Fishguard and West Wales International Music Festival, and will tour Wales again in September 2023.
Khamira's music is somewhere between the cinematic scope of the Pat Metheny Group and the grunge funk of Miles Davis' 70s band, inter-twinned with passages of melancholic Welsh folk music and Indian classical virtuosity.
"An album to place close to Shakti's Natural Elements - and I can't think of much higher praise than that"- Jazz Journal ****
"Amazing" - Chris Philips, JazzFM
"Blurring the edges of genres and cultures here feels entirely organic, summoning the seminal ’70s fusion experiments of John McLaughlin and Miles Davis...fifty-five minutes of extensive, instrumental splendour" - AP Reviews
"When the full band plays the music is almost symphonic in scale and one can understand where the comparisons with Metheny come from, the sound is similarly cinematic and richly coloured and textured" - Thejazzmann ****
"Exquisite" - Adam Walton, BBC Radio Wales
