Tomos Williams
Tomos, from Aberystwyth, is a unique trumpeter in Wales who straddles both the folk and jazz worlds. He has played internationally since the early 2000s.
As well as leading Khamira he also leads the Welsh jazz/folk band 'Burum' and 'Cwmwl Tystion / Witness' a three part deep dive into Welsh culture and history including world renowned musicians.
Tomos has worked with Melvin Gibbs (USA), Nguyên Lê (France), Soweto Kinch (UK), Orphy Robinson (UK), Huw Warren (Wales) and Rhodri Davies (Wales) as part of his Cwmwl Tystion project and his 'Riot! Suite' was nominated for an Ivor Novello Composers Award in 2022.
Tomos was commissioned to write the Surge Suite for his band Burum, for the Surge Celtic Festival at the mac, Birmingham, and in 2024 he was chosen as one of three finalists in the 'Tlws y Cyfansoddwr' (The Composers Award) at the National Eisteddfod, composing for piano, violin, clarinet and cello.
He presents a jazz radio show on BBC Radio Cymru (the National Welsh Language radio station for Wales), and he is Chair of 'Jazz Explorers Cymru' - a grass roots organisation set up to promote jazz within and outside of Wales.
Tomos also leads his own jazz quartet '7Steps' which focuses on the music of Miles Davis,
Tomos masterminded, played on and produced a trio recording with the eminent Welsh triple harpist Llio Rhydderch and Mark O'Connor on drums, called 'Carn Ingli' which was released in 2012.
